3GPP

MPEG-4 Part 14 Container Format

3GPP is an abbreviation for 3rd Generation Partnership Project, and refers to a technical standard for multimedia files developed for 3G cellular networks. 3GPP files, denoted by the .3gpp file extension, are containers that can hold video, audio, subtitles and images encoded in formats like H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 2 for video and AMR or AAC for audio. These codecs are optimized for low bitrates suitable for early 3G networks. The 3GPP file format builds on the ISO Base Media File Format and is closely related to 3GP video format. However, 3GPP defines some extensions like support for streaming media. The 3GPP format was widely adopted for delivering multimedia to mobile phones in the early 2000s. While limited compared to newer formats, 3GPP remains useful for backward compatibility with legacy devices. It allows multimedia content to be packaged for efficient delivery over mobile data networks.
