Computer Graphics Metafile

CGM (Computer Graphics Metafile) is an open, platform-independent file format standardized by ISO and WebCGM used for storing and exchanging two-dimensional vector graphics. Introduced in 1987, CGM was designed to facilitate cross-platform transfer of technical drawings, diagrams, charts, and other business graphics. It stores graphics objects, text elements, and metadata as discrete elements that can be handled separately. CGM files represent graphics independently from any software environment. Most modern computer graphics applications are capable of importing and exporting CGM files identified by the .cgm file extension. Several versions of the CGM standard have emerged with extensions like WebCGM for web applications and Advanced CGM for 3D representations. While less common today, CGM served an important early role as a neutral file format for computer graphics interchange.
