WAV

Waveform Audio File Format

WAV is an audio file format standard used for storing uncompressed, lossless digital audio. Developed by IBM and Microsoft in the early 1990s, WAV files capture CD-quality sound without compression for high fidelity playback. The tradeoff for uncompressed quality is large file sizes relative to lossy formats like MP3. WAV audio data is stored as pulse-code modulation (PCM) in either 16-bit or 24-bit sample sizes at various sampling rates. Bit depth and sampling rate determine the resolution and quality. Higher values require more storage space. WAV files are compatible with Windows, Mac, Linux, and other platforms. The format supports mono or stereo channels. The default WAV file extension is .wav and the format is widely supported by audio editors, media players, and recording/playback hardware. WAV's simplicity and uncompressed fidelity have helped it remain popular for audio editing, mastering, and other professional applications.
