JVC Recorded Video File
MOD is a digital video file format created by JVC for use in camcorders and other devices. Introduced in the 1990s, MOD files contain MPEG-2 video and audio streams compressed specifically for recording onto magnetic tape media. Compared to other formats, MOD files offer relatively low video resolutions better suited for tape-based video cameras. The MOD format uses MPEG-2 Program Stream architecture to interleave video and audio inside a wrapper with .mod as the file extension. MOD also allows recording onto discs like DVD in the closely related VRO format. While interlaced MOD video doesn’t meet modern HD standards, the format significantly advanced home video recording and consumer-level non-linear editing capabilities. Later revisions improved MOD with higher bitrates and MPEG-4 video support. However, competing formats eventually displaced MOD for most applications beyond niche video camera uses.
