MPEG

Moving Picture Experts Group Phase 1 (MPEG-1)

MPEG, which stands for Moving Picture Experts Group, refers to a family of digital video and audio coding formats developed by the eponymous group. Since the early 1990s, the MPEG standard has been instrumental in enabling high quality compression for transmission and storage of video content. The first MPEG standard, known as MPEG-1, enabled Video CD and early digital audio broadcasting. MPEG-2 facilitated DVDs, digital television broadcasting, and higher quality audio. H.264/MPEG-4 AVC has become the predominant video codec for HD media. Other major MPEG standards include MPEG-4 for multimedia, MPEG-7 for metadata and MPEG-21 for multimedia frameworks. While not a single format, MPEG standards form the basis for most digital audio and video compression schemes used today. These technical specifications allow interoperability between different technologies and platforms. MPEG compression remains fundamental to distribution of video content.
