RealMedia Variable Bitrate
RMVB (RealMedia Variable Bitrate) is a compressed video file format developed by RealNetworks in the early 2000s. As the name implies, RMVB uses variable bitrate encoding to dynamically adjust compression based on the complexity of video segments. This optimized bandwidth usage for the limited connection speeds at the time. RMVB files encapsulate RealVideo as well as other media in the RealMedia container. The .rmvb file extension is used. RMVB achieved popularity particularly in Asian markets like China. However, RealNetworks' proprietary technologies meant RMVB saw minimal adoption elsewhere. The rise of more efficient open video standards like H.264 ultimately displaced RealVideo and RMVB. While RMVB was an early attempt at streamable internet video, its closed nature and proprietary codecs limited its success outside specific markets. It did showcase advanced techniques for delivering video over low bandwidth.
